Chimikeppu Lake is located in Tsubetsu Town, Abashiri District, in eastern Hokkaido. Surrounded by untouched primeval forests, it is often referred to as "Hokkaido's hidden gem."
In fact, even among Japanese people and Hokkaido locals, it is a little-known spot, and access is not easy. The lake is about 60 km from Kitami City, about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from Abashiri City, and about 3 hours from Asahikawa City. Public transportation is very limited, so renting a car is recommended.
From the nearest National Route 240, you enter an unpaved gravel road and drive about 14 km through the mountains. Just when you start to wonder, "Is this really the right way?", a small lake and the Chimikeppu Hotel suddenly appear.
